The Builders and The Butchers – Dead Reckoning [Album Review]
The setup and process seems to agree with them as the album has a very loose feel. A meaty stew of blues, folk, and gothic gospel (or as I like to call it – “gothpel”), the Portland-based outfit continue to churn out albums rich in vision. Lead singer Ryan Sollee:
Like our previous records, the settings of the songs follow a few main ideas: the father and the son, early 1900s America, absolute good and evil, addiction, and religion. On this album, I really thought a lot about the end of the world and the dark times we live in, how the feelings we feel and the world we experience is not that different from 1930s America, and I thought about the music that was created at that time. This is where the inspiration for these songs originated.
Their sound takes you to the turn of the century – a band of gypsies traveling town to town playing in a tent revival show, fronted by Sollee as some sort of warped preacher. “All Away,” a song without any percussion, would be the perfect benediction as you exit the tent. It’s only Sollee singing over an acoustic arrangement and it’s gorgeous in its dark, foreboding way. On Dead Reckoning, The Builders and The Butchers continue to carve out a genre defying niche. And for that I am thankful.lunedì 21 febbraio 2011

Dear Sister by Team Me
Team Me first started turning heads after making the finals in NRK P3’s (Norwegian National Radio) Best New Band/Song contest. Soon after, their songs ‘Fool’ and ‘Weathervanes and Chemicals’ hit the radio in Norway while they performed in 8 Norwegian festivals last summer. The band are now set to release their first EP on April 4th in the UK, consisting of five songs recorded in Oslo and produced and mixed by by Tom McFall (REM, Bloc Party, Snow Patrol). Expect the full length album in the fall of 2011. Lucky UK fans will be able to catch them supporting British Sea Power and The Wombats.Song: Dear Sister. Check out their video game while listening to “Weathervanes and Chemicals”

Uscite: L’Enfance Rouge, “Bar-Bari”
"Il trio franco-italiano torna con un nuovo album dal titolo significativo : “Bar-Bari” per Wallace Records. Un nuovo viaggio tra due punti geografici (Montenegro-Puglia), oltre che una dichiarazione istintiva di fronte al sentimento internazionale, diffuso e imperioso di barbarie contemporanea. Un disco elettrico, sinistramente occidentale, un album senza concessioni, dritto e dinamico, potente e ricercato. [...]"

CD BABY's Editor’s Pick – Sewing Pattern: The Bicycle Songcycle
Sewing Pattern is a band out of Chicago which is (from what I can tell) the solo project of Angie Ma, who also plays with indie orchestral pop band Canasta. Taking inspiration from Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois project, and “originally created as a senior thesis project, this album weaves through songs saluting the history of bicycles and lost love”. So that concept grabbed me immediately, as elaborate chamber pop & bicycles are two of my favorite things.
What’s more, the album is a great mix of twee, baroque pop that calls to mind everything from Van Dyke Parks and Margot Guryan to Belle & Sebastian to (natch) Sufjan Stevens. Really fun stuff that I can’t wait to dig into more and absorb the songs. Check out this brief song snippet, then get The Bicycle Songcycle on CD Baby.
